The ASX code of Westpac Banking Corporation, known simply as Westpac. Australia’s first bank and one of the “Big Four” largest banks. Founded as the Bank of New South Wales in 1817, it acquired the Commercial Bank of Australia in 1981 before being renamed to Westpac Banking Corporation in 1982. The name Westpac is a contraction of Western Pacific.
